GETTING STARTED:  Differences among various fibre optics products:

1.    Fibre optics for communications vs. lighting – the two versions are NOT interchangeable.
2.    Long lasting glass vs. limited life plastic
3.    Functional end-emitting vs. side-emitting light guides, which are like decorative neon
4.    Temporary decorative applications vs. permanent architectural functional ones for task, display, architectural features, and ambient illumination

Before the first nail is hammered, there has to be a meeting of the minds between the client and the team assembled.  Once the lighting wish list is determined, there should be at least one meeting (or conference call if necessary) among all the participants of the project.  In that way, a logical schedule can be created that eliminates duplication of effort.

Near future requirements should be anticipated so that additional work won’t have to be done immediately after completion of the project.  Each discipline or trade should comment on methods and procedures that would best do the job.

If research is needed, it should be done by office staff, rather than hourly paid craftsmen on the site.  On existing projects, all furniture should be moved or adequately protected during construction.  Items that cannot be removed, like windows, mirrors, woodwork, flooring, etc. also need covering.  Space to store or assemble components must be provided, as well as a traffic pattern of entry and exit, if the area is large.

Deliveries must be checked as soon as arrived for quantity, correct type and damage.  Not to do so will delay the job while waiting for replacements, and cost someone unexpected sums.

Mock-ups on site or in a research lab should always be done in the presence of decision makers to avoid any surprises later.

Every member of the team, from the architect to the first-year apprentice should be made aware of the glass fibre optics equipment.  Then they won’t waste time on the job satisfying their curiosity about it, and will be careful not to accidentally damage it while it is waiting to be installed.
